Are Peanuts Safe In IBS? Let's Review The Evidence.

Are Peanuts Safe for IBS? Debunking aflatoxin myths.

I have had THREE questions this last week on the safety of peanuts - not just from an IBS perspective - but from an overall health perspective. I understand that there has been some misinformation put out there about the safety of peanuts - specifically in regards to aflatoxin. While aflatoxin (a class of toxic compounds produced by certain types of moulds commonly found on nuts and corn) is a very serious issue - it's usually only an issue in developing countries due to food storage, agriculture processes, limited access to safe food, and food preparation methods. Yes - exposure to aflatoxin can damage your liver and lead to liver cancer - ESPECIALLY in those with hepatitis - a condition quite common in developing countries. YES....

10 Minute Chicken Sausage Saute

Nutrition Month 2018 – Unlock the Power of Food!

We kicked off Nutrition Month 2018 today on Breakfast Television Calgary - talking about unlocking the power of food! I’m loving this unique approach - because we talk A LOT about food relationship at Ignite, and food relationship starts with the family. Food isn't just fuel, but as something that is at the core of our families, cultures, and traditions. Food has the potential to encourage discovery and connection, to fuel, prevent disease, and promote healing. Food is so much more than nourishment - it’s about connection. Leah and I talked about my TOP TIPS to create connection in the kitchen with your family, while incorporating healthy, simple choices. We made my Chicken 'Sausage' Saute, which is a weeknight FAVE at our house. Why it's so awesome: It has SO...

Raincoast Style Crisps

DIY Raincoast Crisps

I want to share a secret with you. Have you ever purchased Raincoast Crisps from the store? The crackers that are thin and have a light crunch. They contain a nutty crunch and sweet taste due to the dried fruit - full of wholesome ingredients - so much so that you wonder if you can make them at home! It turns out - you can! Once I got in on the secret, I just couldn’t keep my mouth shut: DIY Raincoast Crisps are super simple to make homemade! Plus this recipe allows you to make over 10 times the amount of crackers at a fraction of the cost! These crackers are prepared similar to baking a banana loaf. You simply freeze the loaf, chop into thin slices, and bake...

The Role Of Fermented Foods & Probiotics in Gut Health

How Fermented Foods & Probiotics in Gut Health

Fermentation has been used as a preservation method for thousands of years, but the benefits go beyond keeping your food safe to eat. Pickled vegetables and probiotic yogurt are just a few fermented foods that have recently become popular for their gut health benefits. But what exactly is the role of fermented foods in gut health, and why should you eat them? In this two-part fermented food blog series, I’m going to help you understand why fermentation is more than just a buzzword. My amazing student, Amy Pun helped to pen this article - she's pretty fantastic so be sure to thank her for her brains in the comments! It is important to understand the difference between prebiotics, probiotics, and fermented foods. Probiotics are a type of...

Eating Disorders Awareness Week | Assessing Weight & Health Bias

Eating Disorders Awareness Week | Assessing Weight & Health Bias

February 1-7 is eating disorders awareness week  2018 (EDAW). One of our CORE tenants at Ignite is a Health at Every Size philosophy - as well as focusing on food relationship. We work regularly with intuitive eating, disordered eating, food relationship, and binge eating disorders or EDNOS (eating disorder not otherwise specified). There are SO many great activities going on in Calgary, Edmonton & Red Deer for this years EDAW - you can join in the fun & see all the activities here. I'm joining in on the fun myself, and meeting up with my FAVORITE body image gals from The Body Love Society. What a great way to meet awesome people! For our business project, we've decided to host an Instagram event the week of EDAW - focused...
